Sugar Distribution Centre
Illovo Sugar Africa has constructed a new state-of-the-art sugar warehouse and distribution centre, located in Sobantu, just outside of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The centre serves as a central distribution point between Illovo’s sugar production facilities in the province and its retail and industrial customers across the country.
The 51 000 m² warehouse, which includes outbuildings, offices and workshops, covers an area equal to 10 soccer fields, towers 24 metres high and has the capacity to store 170 000 metric tons of sugar – equal to the annual production of a medium-sized sugar mill. It is estimated that, in full operation, approximately 170 road freight vehicles per 24-hour cycle can be handled through the facility.
Illovo is proud to be a member of the local Pietermaritzburg community and is dedicated to improving the livelihoods of the people of Sobantu Village, which borders the distribution centre. In demonstrating this commitment, the group has initiated a number of local community initiatives including a project to upgrade the local crèche which provides daycare for 140 children in the surrounding area.
The warehouse represents another example of Illovo’s ongoing initiatives to optimise supply chain opportunities in order to bring economic and logistical benefits to both the group and our customers.
