Our underlying environmental philosophy is to continually investigate ways to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. Against the background of our Strategic Intent principle to maximise the return on every stick of cane, we are particularly mindful of the possible impacts of our operations on the use of natural resources. We therefore strive to minimise our impacts through efficient use in a responsible and sustainable way and through committing ourselves to continuous improvement. We also strive to comply with all applicable in-country environmental regulations.
Environmental management at our operations is implemented according to the NOSA Integrated Five-Star Management System and ISO 14001. In respect of the UN Global Compact, and with reference to the Rio Declaration on the environment and development, Illovo’s precautionary approach means that when considering new business ventures and expansions, comprehensive due diligence and environmental impact assessments are undertaken to ensure that potential negative environmental impacts are identified and mitigated.
We have identified energy, water, air emissions, effluent and waste, and biodiversity as the most material environmental indicators throughout the group’s operations.

In addition to reporting on the environmental aspects of the company’s operations, we also demonstrates how the other UN Global Compact principles associated with the Rio Declaration on the environment and development, namely, the initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility and encouraging the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies, are integrated into how Illovo conducts its operations.
