GLEDHOW SUGAR COMPANY, which is 30% owned by Illovo Sugar South Africa, remains an important part of the Illovo Group and annually produces between 80 000 – 90 000 tons of high-quality refined sugar to be sold into Illovo Sugar South Africa markets.
During the 2013/14 offcrop period Gledhow embarked on the first phase of ensuring the sustainability of the business by improving the efficiencies of Boilers 1, 2 and 3. The project scope included airflow improvements and changes to fuel feeding systems. These improvements are expected to deliver a coal saving of about 12 000 tons of coal a year, which represents a saving of approximately 15%.
SiVEST were appointed the project EPCM, with boiler design being undertaken by TES. SiVEST also acted as the contractor and delivered the project three weeks ahead of plan and under budget. The project was successfully commissioned prior to the start of the 2014 crushing season.
Phase 2 is currently being engineered and may extend into factory process improvements.
