GLEDHOW SUGAR COMPANY, in which Illovo Sugar has a 30% shareholding, held its fourth Vula Moba (the "Opening of the Crushing" season party) in March, when management and shareholders gathered to celebrate the achievements of the past season and to look forward to a successful campaign in the new season 2013/14.
Larry Riddle, Commercial Director of Illovo Sugar Ltd and Acting Chairman of Gledhow Sugar Co, told guests that Gledhow had “demonstrated resilience and has grown from strength to strength”. The well-attended event was testimony to the commitment of the shareholders and the support they provided to the company. GSC performed well last season relative to its peers and this had laid a solid foundation to embrace the 2013/14 season with an estimated crop of approximately 1.4 million tons of cane.
Paul de Robillard, GSC’s Executive Board Vice-Chairman, said the recent good rainfall had upped the estimates for cane and for sugar production, which would positively affect the bottomline and profitability.
Among the guests were the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Cane Growers, Suresh Naidoo and Tim Murray, and the director of SASRI, Dr Carolyn Baker.
