"Green Is For ‘Best’"
ZAMBIA SUGAR is the first company to win the prestigious Zambia Environmental Agency (ZEMA) award for “Overall Contribution to Sound Management Practices in Industry”. ZEMA Acting Director General Joseph Sakala presented the award to Zambia Sugar representative Emmanuel Kapika (security commandant) during the 2013 Environmental Awards Ceremony held at the Radison Blu Hotel in Lusaka.
This category was introduced by ZEMA in 2012. The agency based its decision on utilisation of Best Environmental Technology (BET) and Best Environmnental Practices (BEP). For Zambia Sugar it was the recognition of the installation of the best available environmental technology - the wet scrubber on Boiler 6. The boiler, installed during the 2007 Nakambala Expansion Project, is fitted with a wet scrubber which removes the particulate matter and gas from emissions into the atmosphere.
The award also recognised Zambia Sugar’s commitment - demonstrated by its corporate social responsibility - that promotes environmental management, its environmental policy and management system, as well as the company having won other ZEMA awards or equivalent in the past 3 years.
