The Tanzania Distillery: Easy Does It
"The Tanzania Distillery: Easy Does It"
THE IDTL (Illovo Distillers Tanzania Limited) 40kl/day Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) plant was successfully commissioned on 19 August 2013. Technology and design came from PRAJ (India) and the erection was done by DB Shapriya, a local Tanzanian Contractor for PRAJ (Tanzania) on an EPC Fidic form of contract.
Within the first week of startup the plant produced extra neutral alcohol of an excellent organoleptic quality. On 27 September samples also passed the much sought after DISTELL International Operations Quality Analysis and the product was approved for distribution to the IDTL customer, Tanzania Distillers Limited (TDL) in Dar-es-Salaam.
These are fantastic achievements by the operational team comprising PRAJ commissioning engineers and a 100% Tanzanian operations team developed by the IDTL distillery manager, with assistance from Illovo Merebank, Glendale and Head Office. The assistance by management and members of these entities contributed significantly to the smooth commissioning and current operation of the plant, and is appreciated by IDTL management.
THE plant further demonstrated within the first two weeks of operation that it was able to meet and then consistently exceed design throughput capacity and it is anticipated a 10% upside may well be achievable on a sustainable basis.
Comments from the IDTL distillery manager Veneshree Naidu probably sum it up best when she wrote to Head Office recently saying: “This plant is awesome – it is robust and has coped with numerous shuts and starts and it stabilises quickly and delivers good quality – I love it !! ”
The project is currently wrapping up defects and smaller incomplete peripheral scope items, but well done to all the project members of Kilombero, Head Office, PRAJ and DB Shapriya, on delivering an asset which when fully complete will be an asset of which the Group can be very proud. At the AB Sugar Focus Awards in UK in November, the Kilombero distillery project won the category for Project Delivery.
