ALL ABOUT BARISTAS – AND ZAMBIA SUGAR
"ALL ABOUT BARISTAS – AND ZAMBIA SUGAR"
A BARISTA (ba'rista/ buh-REE-stuh; from the Italian for "bartender") is a person, usually a coffeehouse employee, who prepares and serves espresso-based coffee drinks. Zambia Sugar was the official sponsor of the 2014 National Barista Championship which, in its eighth consecutive year running, is aimed at developing Zambia’s coffee industry and improving the standards of coffee serving in Zambia. So this year’s event was dubbed ‘2014 Zambia Sugar National Barista Championship’. The baristas competed over a two-day period from 15-17 April at the Manda Hill Shopping Mall in Lusaka.
Zambia Sugar donated financial, technical as well as material support to the Zambia Barista Committee, working under the auspices of the Zambia Coffee Growers Association. This is part of the company’s contribution to culture and sport development in Zambia.
The event attracted baristas from various parts of the country. Zambia Sugar was represented by its finance director Henry Mambwe, who also gave out beautifully handcrafted prizes to the winners. The Top Barista was Ms Dailess Nalwamba. Dailess went on to represent Zambia at the World Barista Championship in Italy.
